Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *hljak (iron). Cognate with Tibetan ལྕགས (lcags). According to the Shuowen, alternative forms included (OC *l'iːl, *l̥ʰiːd). Compare (OC *l̥ʰiːɡ, *l'iːɡ, “black horse”).
