Etymology
Originally meant arrowhead, or the barb(point) of an arrow. Also meant flat arrowhead. Later its meaning collapsed to the meaning of 'to give' from 畀予. Also see Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-bəj-n/k (“to give”). Cognate with Tibetan སྦྱིན (sbyin, “to give, to bestow”) and Burmese ပေး (pe:, “to give”).

Usage notes
- In a passive-voice sentence in Cantonese, 畀 is always followed by an object and not a verb, unlike Mandarin 被 which can be followed by an object or a verb.
