Etymology[edit]

Phono-semantic compound (形聲, OC *rɯʔ): semantic  ‎(jade) + phonetic  ‎(OC *rɯʔ)

The original meaning was "veins in jade". The "logic" meaning might come from the association between jewels on a string and threads of a reasoning process.

According to the Shuowen Jiezi, the character meant "to polish jade". The current meaning "to order, tidy up" might come from it.
