Ideogram (指事) – a differentiated form (分化字) of (OC *kaːw, “high, tall”), with a differentiating marker, which was variously a stroke, , , , , or .

Based on the form, only attested starting from the Han dynasty (Chi, 2010), Shuowen erroneously interprets as a semantic component meaning “to bend” and treats the character as a phono-semantic compound (形聲).

Etymology[edit]

“tall; proud”
Cognate with (OC *krew, “to lift the head”), (OC *krew, “proud”), (OC *krewʔ, “to lift”), (OC *ɡrews, “peak”); (OC *kaːw, “high; tall”) and (OC *krewʔ, “martial; vigorous”) could be allofams (Schuessler, 2007).
Joel
From English Joel.
