A language based upon smell[edit]

We have speech (verbal and auditory), writing (sighted), braille (touch), sign language (physical); yet there is one sense we're all forgetting—smell! As such, the administration at Wiktionary has decided to officially launch the Wiktionary Olfaction-Language Project tasked with creating the first-ever language based upon the human olfactory interpretation of airborne molecules of odour!

Olfaction-Language[edit]

Gas stations typically smell like Benzene(form1)7-Toluene(form1)4-Xylene(form1)1

Etymology[edit]

Chosen to represent a greeting due its near-universal recognisability, distinctiveness, pleasantness and aromaticness.

Odour description[edit]

The odour of gasoline (petrol).

Production[edit]

The principal chemical in gasoline is benzene (corresponding to the amount of “7” in the Wiktionary Olfaction-Language Project notation), which is very similar to the odour of gasoline itself; toluene, similarly pungent and aromatic to benzene, smells like paint thinner and certain types of glue. The combination (consisting of an amount of “4”) with benzene increases the odour of gasoline's intensity, while a small hint of xylene (“1”) slightly increases the fragrancy and sweetness.

In Wiktionary Olfaction-Language Project notation, it is displayed as follows:

  • Benzene(form1)7-Toluene(form1)4-Xylene(form1)1

“Form 1” indicates that it is the most common smell of said substance, as various types of substances with differing odours may exist.

Interjection[edit]

Benzene(form1)7-Toluene(form1)4-Xylene(form1)1 HELLO

  1. Hello; hi; greetings.
