According to Shuowen, a phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *qrɯm) : semantic + phonetic ().

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *r(u/i)m (dark; shade; dusk; twilight); compare Tibetan རུམ (rum, darkness), Jingpho rim (to be dusk) (Benedict, 1972; Bodman, 1980; STEDT).

Schuessler (2007) compares it instead to Burmese အုံ့ (um., to become overcast), Adi mugyum (shade; shadow), Lepcha ᰠᰨᰌᰤᰪᰮ (so-dyŭm, shade).

Pronunciation
