Etymology

Anglo-Saxon Futhorc letter ᚢ (u, “ur”)
Anglo-Saxon Futhorc letter ᚢ (u, “ur”)

From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle English lower case letter (deprecated template usage) v (also written (deprecated template usage) u), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old English lower case (deprecated template usage) u, from 7th century replacement by lower case (deprecated template usage) u of the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc letter (deprecated template usage) (u), derived from Raetic letter (deprecated template usage) u.

Before the 1700s, the pointed form (deprecated template usage) v was written at the beginning of a word, while a rounded form (deprecated template usage) u was used elsewhere, regardless of sound. So whereas (deprecated template usage) valor and (deprecated template usage) excuse appeared as in modern printing, (deprecated template usage) have and (deprecated template usage) upon were printed (deprecated template usage) haue and (deprecated template usage) vpon. Eventually, in the 1700s, to differentiate between the consonant and vowel sounds, the (deprecated template usage) v form was used to represent the consonant, and (deprecated template usage) u the vowel sound. (deprecated template usage) v then preceded (deprecated template usage) u in the alphabet, but the order has since reversed.

Clearly there is no question or doubt about the names of the vowels A, E, I, O, U. They are simply long A, long E, etc. (ā, ē, ī, ō, ū). Nor is there any uncertainty with respect to the six mutes B, C, D, G, P, T. Their names are bē, cē, dē, gē, pē, tē (each with a long E). Or about H, K, and Q: they are hā, kā, kū — each, again, with a long vowel sound.
